Outside the Headmaster's Study I

Waiting
Waiting

I've a frog in my throat
Butterflies in my belly
My palms are all sweaty
My legs feel like jelly

Knock Knock
Come in

I was right to be scared
Because it seems I'm to blame
So it's six of the best
And my bottom's aflame

About the Poem

Corporal punishment is banned in schools, making this poem something of a historical anomaly. If you were given 'six of the best' it meant that you received six blows of the cane (or perhaps plimsoll or slipper) on your bottom. A cruel and unusual punishment and not something to be recommended!
